I think that if you like black clothes because you do you can be goth but not if you WANT to be thought of as goth or whatever
Same thing with preppy
I like preppy clothes but I am not a prep. I do not wear Abercrombie and Fitch and American Eagle so I can look preppy. I wear the clothes because I like it and I am not a prep by any means.

I agree, I think most people who feel they do not fit in tend to go one way or the other. They are not confident or content with who they are so they choose to get in with one crowd or another. Now, the flip of the coin is, my nephew originally had a low self esteem and felt important with the goths and then he really ended up having a lot of fun in the underground clubs and they do seem to share a stronger bond with one another as far as loyalty and friendship goes. More loyal to one another in friendship than Ihave ever had so I guess it is not all bad.

Now? Where have you been? Goth has been around for at least a decade. And Preps have been around since the eighties.
My tuxedo is elegant: does that make me a snob?

I know! You are absolutely right!
I am open-minded, I listen to many kinds of rock. And even pop, r'n'b, and others.
But that is not goth's fault!!! They are what they want to be. But prep ppl make fun of them and that stinks!
In my school are only goths, punkers etc and regular people. No preps! That's why I love it!

Maybe you need to broaden you horizons to the type of people you are hanging around.... hit a new location for going out or grocery shopping.
I see so few of either of these people...
I am simply obsessed with living life to the fullest...I guess I don't pay much attention to what others are doing.
The phrase : "What you think of me is none of my business" comes to mind.
Live well !

Why do people do it? They do it because everyone wants:
1. an identity
2. a peer group
3. a sense of style
Remove any one of those three, and you're thinking for yourself.

It has always been like this. When I was a teen, there were preps, jocks, punks, headbangers.
