Multivitamins may seem like a good idea, but if you are eating healthy you are most likely getting most of what you need from your diet. Most vitimins in high dosages are passed through your system, causing no harm, but if you already have high levels of some vitimins and minerals (like calcium), taking it as an additional supplement can cause problems. Multivitimins may also not have what you are lacking or contain a form that you can't process. I would recommend getting muscle tested to see what your body needs and then get muscle tested on the various types of that supplement to see which works best for you. It is a bit more expensive initially to buy all your supplements individually, but you can be sure you are getting what you need, the right dosage and the form of the supplement you need.

jonny,
In order to receive the most benefit from your vitamins they need to be absorbed into your system and not flushed down the toilet. If you are taking your vitamins in pill form, drop the pills in about 4 oz of water and let them sit till they are dissolved. Use a spoon to make sure they are all liquid. They will taste absolutely horrible. The next time you buy your vit. look for a good liquid vitamin, some even have a taste that's not that bad.

When taking any multi-vitamins, make sure you take them with a meal. Also, if you are concerned enough to take your vitamins, go one step more and get a multi-vitamin/mineral that includes all the trace mineral.

There are a lot of misunderstanding about food supplement.
First, choose what food supplement do u need. Most people would recommend a multivitamin. But, the our body basic needs are,
1. multivitamin&minerals
2. vitamin C 500mg (slow released is better)
3. B complex
4. protein
If u take all these, then, u r taking enough supplement for urself to prevent any diseases, to shorten any illness time, to strenghten ur immune system and to ensure optimum growth/cells replication.
If u have any other diseases, then u would consider taking extra, that would bebeneficial for that disease@illnessess, eg. omega for heart disease, etc.

Second, in choosing which brand to take. Opt for brands that offer natural, plant source, have multiple CLINICAL research (tested to human being for some period of time) before being released to market, researches have been published in medical journals, have a long and good history in market without any major complains, is effective...have lots of human testimony and check for the content(mg or I.U.) And not to forget, the absorption rate of each supplement.

Third, how u take it. The best is to take it at the same time everyday, after meal and REGULARLY.

U should read the book 'food supplement' by Bruce Miller, he's a nutritionist that make a comparitive studies on supplement of different brands.

You might consider taking your vitamins in liquid form or you might try crushing your vitamins into a rough powdery substance and add the powdery substance to your food as long as the food is at room temperature.

Also, check with your pharmacist. Sometimes if you take vitamins and minerals in combination form, you may have a better absorption rate, i.e., you will get batter results if you take selenium with vitamin E, rather than taking vitamin E by itself.

Also, there are books that have been written about this exact subject. One such book is entitled the 'Vitamin Bible'. Check with your nearest bookstore.
