Oh, let's see -- where to start.
In the 1920's in America there was a rash of women killing their husbands and getting off scot-free. The media sensationalized it.
Several movies were made, including a drama called Roxy Hart.
The musical Chicago, directed by the legendary Bob Fosse opened on Broadway in 1976. Unhappy for him, but great for the rest of the world, A Chorus Line opened too and simply buried the show.
Around (I think) the early 90's revival began coming out of the show with stars playing the lead roles with regional success. People began noticing that it's really a great show and it became more popular.
In, 2004, or close to that -- Chicago the movie opened (riding the apron strings of the successful musical Moulon Rouge) with four or five pretty big stars and won Best Picture among others.
Roxy Hart is guilty. But she gets off and tries to parlay her fame from the murder trial into a show business career.
It's a highly stylized production. There is a lot of abstraction and implied meaning. And it's fantastic. If I were preparing to go see the show, I'd at least buy the soundtrack before hand.
Enjoy the show!

It's a muical about playing the system in order to become famous in the 1920s Chicago vaudville scene. Involves murder, lies, deseat, and all the things we hold dear and near to our hearts.
It's a confussing show, and vary risque, so be warned, no for children. The show is done simuler to the entire story being a set of vuadville acts telling a single story. Preaty good, but confusing

Chicago is great - they made a film adaptation of it with Richard Gere. You could rent that before seeing the stage production to see what it's about.
Brief synopsis: Roxy Hart wants to become famous, but get's framed for murder. Billy Flynn is her flamboyant lawyer who tries to get her free.

It's about two hours too long, in my opinion.
