Hi there.
Like many HP Pavillion models, you do not have a separate
video card or video slot - the video is generated by an
" IGP " or Imbedded Graphical Processor, which is part of
the motherboard chipset.
On the HP website's download driver page, there is NO video
driver, since Microsoft included a generic video driver for the
SiS 5598 motherboard chip.
If you are getting video at all, then Windows 98 had turned on
the default " VGA " settings that are included in all modern
chip programming.
You probably do not need the updated drivers from the manufacturer of the chipset, SiS, but you can get them on the links I have given you below...
First, just try to go into the basic settings to see what the problem is..
In Win 98 click START, Settings, CONTROL Panel, Display, Settings, and look at the setting under the bottom left color band,
" Colors ". There is a PULL down arrow, and you should be able to pull down the list of valid settings.
Click on APPLY and OK and you should be OK.
If this does not work, go thru the same clicks as above, and then
on the bottom right there is Advanced.
click on this to make certain that you have a NAMED monitor,
since if the MONITOR is not recognized by Windows, it will NOT
set up the full set of Adapter settings ( in the next tab to Monitor ),
so that you will not be using the full capabilities of the Adapter
( the SiS motherboard chipset ).
If you CHANGED the monitor, then this would account for the problem.
If you did not change the monitor, and have the correct one,
then the procedure above should work... !
hope this helps..

From the "Start" menu, go to "Setting's.. Click on "Control Panel" Select "Display"
Click on Settings and your choices will appear. Don't forget to click on "OK" after you choose your color setting.

Not only do you need the correct driver for your graphics card, you also need one for your monitor.
