Normally the heart beats between 60-100 times per minute. In people who exercise routinely or take medications that slow the heart, the rate may drop below 55 beats per minute.
If your heart rate is very fast (over 100 beats per minute), this is called tachycardia. An unusually slow heart rate is called bradycardia, and an occasional extra heart beat is known as extrasystole.
Palpitations (heart beat) are often not serious. However, it depends on whether or not the sensations represent an abnormal heart rhythm (called an arrhythmia). You are more likely to have an abnormal heart rhythm if you have:

The normal range for a person is 60 to 100 beats per minute. Anything below 60 is bradycardic, and anything above 100 is tachycardic. Now going above or beyond doesn't always necessarily mean you have a possible disease. Athletes are known to have slower heart rates than average person with the efficiency of how their heart pumps. Heart rate increases too in people who are exercising or may have emotional reactions. But once you do feel symptoms with changes in heart rate, it wouldn't hurt to go see a physician. Hope this helps!
