My career has taken some turns recently, into the realm of professional makeup. Despite good luck so far, I never went to any cosmetology school,MUA training, or such. Would you advise I do in order to be seen as a more "legit"/successful makeup artist? If so....reccomendations please.

no... most of the famous make up artistes never attended school anyways. you just gotta be lucky and maybe someone famous comes around and there you have.. If you do good makeup, then it will start a chain reaction.

i don't know if there are any laws regarding this, but i think that some people just have an eye for this sort of thing. there are some people who go to school, but still make you look like a clown, and some people who are just born with natural talent. in order to be seen as more legit, you could try putting together a portfolio. get some volunteers, friends, and family, of all different ages and skin colors/types. take before and after pictures. you could do some makeovers to show day looks, some for night looks, some wedding looks, and maybe some edgier runway type looks.

I don't think so, yet it's always good to have that background behind you. Especially if you want to do shows, and photography work. There are two good schools in New York that I know of, one is Christine Valmy and the other Is New York Beauty School. You should check them out.

You should go work for a upscale salon and get experienced that way...or just go get a certificate while you work. That does usually help but really most who are successful just met the right people in the industry or worked under someone who carried them. good luck.

If you are already doing well, I would not call it luck, but talent. But if you want to be sure of yourself, get into something more advanced than your average vocational cosmetology program.

I don't think you need more schooling, just go to hair shows, go to make-up shows, and just get more hands on!
