according to yahoo.com and AAA, there are two listed distances: 424 miles From columbus go east via I-70. at wheeling turn south on I-77, go east on U.S. 220, and then I-64 to lexington where it merges with I-81 north and veer off/east on I-64 with to williamsburg via richmond. this is considered the more scenic route and crosses the spectacular new river gorge bridge, but is less busy and takes the same appx. time as the next one below.
the alternate route is 396 miles from Columbus, east on I-70 all the way to Pittsburgh to the (toll road) Pennsylvania turnpike to the exit (I-69 i believe) for Fredericksburg, Md. to the D.C. (1-295) beltway to I-95 south to richmond then to I-264 east to williamsburg. besides the exensive toll road this is also a busy car/truck route esp, at Pittsburgh and around the DC beltway.
with good weather and lite traffic, AAA recommends that you plan on it being an 10-11 hour trip (60 mph) with 15 min rest/stretch breaks every 2 hrs and a 30 min. eat break after 6-7 hrs. many young people try to drive straight thru (alternating drivers), but it is not recommended for one person to do so.
However, if you are going to the town, college or amusement park, it's easier to fly in from Columbus to Richmond, Va Intl. A/P and drive down (little over an hour) or in to patrick henry airport in Newport News, va. (20 min away). gorgeously and historically restored colonial town, great college (oldest in Va and disputed with harvard as the oldest in US) and one of the best of the Busch Gardens amusement parks in the system.

My suggestion is to fly. Other than that, you are talking about 10 hrs.
