And why? I don't see that much of a difference between the two, except the thinnes of the g-string. Why not phase one of the styles out? Since their generally the same thing.

They are not the same.
I prefer g-strings because a thong makes me feel as if I have a wedgie because it's thick. You can't feel the g-string.
