It's a personal thing. Some women are ashamed of their own selves, and try to hide behind it. Some do it because they view their face as a canvas, and each day they get to explore with a new painting on it. Some think that makeup matching an outfit makes them appear more sophisticated. Some women just feel better with makeup that commands attention. Others don't see it as excessive because of how the women in their family wear their makeup. Some never get out of the middle-school-girl mindset of "makeup is FUN!" There is no one set reason why.

I, personally, rarely wear makeup, but when I do it's dramatic, but always in a unique way. Sometimes, when I want to get into the gothic, I'll paint spiderwebs with my eyeliner, coming to points in the corner of my eyes, because their shape actually creates the illusion of a different shape to my eyes. If I'm in a more earthey mood, I'll just use eyeshadow and liner in shades of green to create leaves on my eyelids, and earthey tones to make a flowing green or brown outfit look more like the nature I'd rather be in. I've been known to draw tribal curls along my entire profile to make a high fighter's bun seem more intimidating at a concert. It only gets caked on when I do the whole zombie gashes and decaying flesh effect to make an industrial outfit a little more personal, or to turn an undead spotlight onto a style in a dying scene, when the shows become one decent band surrounded by corporate powerchord-and-product-testing bubblegum pap. It's usually my mood and whatever music I'm going to see that night that make me put it on, and even then, it's never your conventional styles. I like to go with the excessive makeup myself, because it tends to keep guys from flirting with me in the hopes of a hookup, but at the same time, a truly unique painting that plays into the contours of the canvas of my face tends to get a lot of people to start conversations. I've even been told that my makeup has moved with my body at concerts, because it tied in so well to my mood, my energy, my style, and my personality.

I have seen in the years that the older a woman gets, the heavier the makeups gets. The way I see it, they are trying to cover up all the years of abuse, wrinkles, spots, etc. What they don't realize is that you don't need to apply it with a spackling tool. And I have also seen that the older a woman gets, they tend to mismatch their foundation to their skin tone. Why do women have to get a foundation that makes them look like a Kabuki dancer? Don't get me started on the blush and lipstick either.
You don't know how many times I have gone into the mall and seen these "clowns" and how badly I want to give them an on the spot consult. Bottom line ladies: STOP GLOPPING IT ON!! Your man doesn't like all that goop!! And if you don't have one, maybe this is part of the problem?

Because they want positive attention. Seeing these beautiful woman that have men drooling over them makes the lonely woman wonder hmmm why can't I do that. They attempt, but fail sometimes. If only men would look at the beautiful woman out there that are natural. They are the best woman out there.
Well it won't happen. The main point is if men wouldn't set such high standards on woman, they wouldn't feel like they need to do that. It feels so horrible when people treat you like crap, especially when you are looking for love.

I know lost of people who happen to think that using more helps. lol. You're right. Really doesn't. It's kinda sad though, when you see a cute girl who has gobs of makeup on her face. I think makeup is something that should be used sparsely, but some women get carried away because they're trying to cover their acne, or wrinkles, or some other blemish.

Any woman who cakes makeup doesn't know how to apply it properly. When applied properly it is almost invisible, and is very flattering.

Sometimes they do it unknowingly. Also, cheaper makeup often gives the "cakey" look
