STAR WARS
The original. After watching wretched 'sci fi ' for a year or two
the future looked bleak. The cluttered reality of the Millenium
Falcon, and the special effects, and the empathy the audience
attained to each of the characters was refreshing. I saw the movie
a dozen times, - each time looking for details that I had missed
all around the main objects - the backgrounds the details, the
sounds etc. While it may not be the "latest and greatest" in today's computer animated flicks, it was probably the beginning
of movie making as we know it today, with the start of Industrial
Light and Magic, and all the many clones today.
The advent of the ability to overcome gravity utilized throughout
the movie was matter of fact, which, I hope , will be started in
my lifetime. The ability to travel to other planets and stars was
matter of fact, and well portrayed.
In short, there is HOPE for mankind, - that we may explore and
utilize other resources before we obliterate and " USE UP " everything on earth. Deep down, I am a techie. I may like the
incredible sunsets and the great outdoors, but these things won't
last long the way the planet is changing.
The 'hope' that we can enjoy sunsets ( with two suns ) on a distant planet is a dream I must have had without knowing it,
until I saw the movie...

There have been a few that have stuck with me for various resaons, and I have taken inspiration from in some form or another, and bits that have stayed wirh me that have enriched my life.
Some include
The Elephant Man
The House of Sand and Fog
Papillon (although it is fair to say that book ran rings around the movie as far as pure inspiration in the form of courage in the face of adversity)
Alive
Chariots of Fire
Dead Poets Society
..just to name a few

I don't know that it "changed" anything about my life, I was young enough when I saw it that it more accurately helped form my attitude toward docilely accepting convention or immediately dismissing unconventional ideas. The movie was called, "Inherit the Wind," and was/is about Clarence Darrow's defense of a biology teacher in Tennessee for presenting evolution to his class.

American History X :
Bob Sweeney: There was a moment... when I used to blame everything and everyone... for all the pain and suffering and vile things that happened to me, that I saw happen to my people. Used to blame everybody. Blamed white people, blamed society, blamed God. I didn't get no answers 'cause I was asking the wrong questions. You have to ask the right questions.
Derek Vinyard: Like what?
Bob Sweeney: Has anything you've done made your life better?
