Murabak: "‘We must take advantage of peaceful uses of nuclear energy; we do not start from a vacuum, and we possess a knowledge of these techniques which enables us to proceed. We want to develop nuclear energy"

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak made this surprising declaration Thursday, saying that his country wants "to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes."

"We must take advantage of new and renewable energy sources, including the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and I call for a serious dialogue which takes into account the clean and cheap sources of energy available through nuclear technologies," he said.

humm. the article further emphasized that the US and Egypt are "friends".
But no. Egypt may well have a plan for "peaceful uses for nuclear energy, but it looks as the though the ENTIRE region simply does not want to be left behind.
"Peaceful purposes" will soon be par for course.

Its a legitimate request. Sorry, pandora's box has been opened and everyone's using nuclear power until they can get more money out of their solar, hydroelectric and wind power.
It can also be used for space-age technology (like building something that could fly to Mars in a shorter amount of time).

Coal and gasoline are, in some ways, worse.

No one wants a nuclear war.
