The best way to tell is if you have an ant trail going to your gas cap......Just kidding, If you suspect sugar in your tank, don't take any chances Do not attempt to start your engine because that will make the situation significantly worse. And drain your gas tank immediately. You could do so by siphoning out all of the gas. If signs of foreign material does exist in the gas that you pull out, then drop the tank after it is empty to clean it completely. When finished, pour in a good fuel system cleaner into the tank and then fill the tank completely with fuel. Good Luck, Oh, and buy the way, You might want to invest in a locking gas cap now.

Actually, putting sugar in a gas tank won't do much. All it really does is clog up your fuel filter. You will have to drain your tank to get out all the sugar granules then change the fuel filter. That's about it. If the was a lot of it then you might have to change the fuel filter again in a week or so.

First of all, what makes you think someone put sugar in there? And how much would they have used?
Just drive it. If you notice any hesitation, rough idling, loss of power or decreased gas mileage, take it to a shop and ask them to check your fuel filter. Get a new filter and try it again. If you think they put a LOT in there, you'll probably have to have them drop your tank and clean or replace it.

Nope, you will have to drop the tank and look in to see. Sugar does not dissolve in gasoline, so it will still be granules in the tank. If you think this is what happened, you need to drop the fuel tank and have it cleaned andchange the fuel filter. No lasting damage would occur.
