im torn between van halen and clapton...your thoughts??

But i would have to say for the all time greatest guitar player is Stevie Ray Vaughan

Out of those 2, I would say Clapton, He's a living legend that says it all... Van Halen's tapping technique was a rip off, the original guitarist to first play and use this technique was Steve Hackett from Genesis, Van Halen went to a Genesis concert and he was blown away blah blah is all on Guitar Player magazine, and Guitar World had a similar article years later, even Van Halen recognized his playing tech was not his own invention.. I mean he has some great solos but that doesn't make him the best guitarist of all time sorry ...I would take Steve Hackett's playing and style over Van Halen anyday.. at least Hackett besides inventing a technique and not getting the credit and the recognition he deserves has an awesome tone and his style is always evolving ..truly amazing
Sorry Van Halen fans he is great, but the story of the tapping technique is true and has been published in guitar mags mentioned above...

jimi hendrix was definitely innovative. but for flat out playing the guitar it would have to be eddie van halen or stevie ray vaughan.
