what are the purpose of dreams anyway?

Most psychologists agree that there are two main reasons for recurring dreams. The most obvious reason, and the most frequent cause, is from repetitive daytime routines. For example, if you work in a shoe store you're probably going to have dreams about trying shoes on people, and variations on that theme, i.e. can't find the right size, big feet attacking you-LOL, etc.
But I'm guessing you're referring to dreams that are not so obvious and that don't seem to tie in to anything happening in your life. These type of dreams are usually the product of your subconscious trying to get a message to you. All of your deepest desires and concerns reside in your subconscious. But the only way it can "talk" to you is through symbolism during your dream state, because when you're awake and functioning in the world everyday, your conscious mind and your ego are in control. Thus, the sub can't "get a word in edgewise" so to speak.
The symbols can be difficult to figure out, but there a good number of books that can giude you. And once you get some practice at it, there is another whole subject on dreaming called "lucid dreaming" where you can program what you want to dream about before you go to bed at night, and even tell your subcon. to answer questions for you so you wll remember upon awakening. There is also alot of stuff out there to read on lucid dreaming. It takes practice and patience, but I can attest that it works.
The subcon is far more powerful than the conscious, so you should try to listen to it. That is one thing that Sigmund Freud was right about.

When I have a dream that i can't get out of my head all day, something usually happens to me that had somthing to do with my dream. . The point then, is to find a meaning to it. A lot of times my dreams come true. I'll dream I'm somewhere I've never been before then months later I will end up in that place and realize "hey I've been here before!"

recurring dreams can mean many things. for example, a warning, a fortelling of some good event, aperson you'll meet and even something wrong with you such as a health issue. most dreams, however, are the subconcius mind acting out its own desires, and have nothing of importance in them. other times, the subconcious mind is trying to tell you something, but it is hard to say what as each person's dreams may have far different meanings.

This is not exactly the question to put in an Astronomy & Space category. But,if you must; Dreams are somekind of a filtering mechanism of the nervous system. Sleep is someohow necessary for any organism with a descent nervous system. Supposedly we do more thinking or problem solving in our dreams. You need to sleep to form memories.

Usually means something, if you can relate it to something in your hours awake. It's your subconscience
trying to tell you something. I think dreams make things ok for when you wake up!
