Blaine Rawlings (James Franco) and his character's quiet, purposeful idealism was inspired by one of the most colorful pilots, Frank Luke. A farm boy from Arizona, guns were a way of life for him, and he came into the squadron as a crack shot. During his short lifetime, Luke was lionized in the press as "The Balloon Buster", an allusion to his single-minded and daring attacks on the toughest targets: heavily defended German observation balloons.
