If you have both computers connected through a router, then you must verify that both have the same workgroup (verify it in My PC properties, computer name), and then you have to share folders, to do it, you must right click the folder to share, and select Share/Security. Open Network places and there you'll see the folders on each computer.

If you don't have a router or a network, then you have to create one: Get a crossover cable (you can get it in Best Buy or CompUSA) and connect both computers through the RJ45 connection. Right click My PC and select properties, assign a workgroup for both computers (must be the same) and a different computer name.
Open network connections in control panel, right click the LAN icon (Local Area Network) and select properties. Double click "TCP/IP" and select "Use the following IP address", in one PC type 192.168.1.1, gateway 255.255.255.0, the second PC IP: 192.168.1.2, gateway 255.255.255.0
There is no need to assign DNS or other configurations.

To share files between computers, follow the first steps as if you have a router.
That should work.
With these configurations, you will be able to share files

i'm no longer confident if I understood proper yet when I did than what you want is a router. you could get it for round $40. you'll then connect your cable modem to it and the router will look after the internet connection (trough the cable modem). Than you connect both one in each of your computers to the router and through this kind they're going to be able to seek for suggestion from with one yet another and also percentage the internet connection. also the router also will look after you from cyber web viruses that spread immediately with out consumer intervention. I in no way connect to the internet with out one.

YOu need a "crossover" cable. You can buy one at most any computer store, and likely also at Office Depot or Staples. You can use the Network Wizard to make them talk to each other.

i dont know why people are typing books to answer this, just stick a cat-5 in between them using the ethernet cards. share your files in your OS. done. use a router if you want your net on both pcs also. you should google for router info tho, you might need some pictures etc.

I had my two computers networked at one time, and used a hub with two ethernet cables.
