We're invited to a VERY fancy wedding in Manhattan -- wedding is a church wedding at 3:30 PM, then the reception is a black tie affair at the Pierre, starting at 6:00 PM. My question is: are we expected to change clothing between the two events??? My husband is wearing a tuxedo and I am wearing an evening gown to the reception -- it is tasteful, but sleeveless with a shawl, floor-length. We are staying at a different hotel from where the reception will be (can't quite afford the $1000+ rooms at the Pierre!). Should I plan to wear something different to the actual church wedding (and maybe a regular suit for my husband) and then go back to our hotel to change into eveningwear?

Well, I'm thinking that if the reception is black-tie, then the church should be very formal. I'm just about sure that people will change between the time of the actual wedding & reception. Three hours is a long time to wait for a reception in an evening gown & black tie. Also thinking that, if it's that fancy, others want others to "wonder what she'll wear???!" for the reception.
Your gown sounds perfect ! His tux does too! Have a great time! Happy, happy to the bride & groom, too!

For a church wedding you should wear something that covers the shoulders out of respect for the institution. A suit or dress would be nice but nothing that would distract attention from the bride, such as red. Your evening gown would be perfect for a formal reception for the evening. I would definitely change and freshen up at the hotel if time permits. It could be a long, fun evening and you want to look your best. There are many websites about wedding guest etiquette if you do a quick search. Sounds like fun!

Black-tie attire for an afternoon wedding is very strange. If the invitation indicated that only the reception is black-tie, then yes, I would change. A nice suit would be good for both of you for the actual ceremony, then formal wear for the dinner. Do you know any other people who are attending? You could ask them for their take on it. Or, if you are close to the bride or groom, just ask them what their expectations are for guests' attire. Some people say black-tie, but don't really know what they're asking for.......

I would say this depends on how long the Wedding program is anticipated.

If the wedding is at 3:30, if there is a mass, it could last as long as 2 hours.

I suspect, as in most weddings, the reception is scheduled immediately following the wedding ceremony.

You will see Bride's change to the "honeymoon" dress, but you rarely see anyone else change clothing.
