These little portable propane heaters can be used with a 20 gal tank -- is this the same system we would use on our portable gas grills?

Read the user guide because some heaters run on a different sort of fuel such as heating oil. But if it says propane, and the fittings are compatible, then you can use the same tank that you use for your grill.

Most of the small heaters are designed for use with the disposable cylinder, but there is also what is commonly referred to as, tank top portable heaters that screw directly into the service POL valve on the 20lb grill cylinder.

The fuel in both the disposable cylinder and the 20lb grill cylinder is the same product. All modern portable heaters have the same operating pressure of 11 inch’s of water column, which equates to around ½ pound of operating pressure. The pressure regulator on portable heaters is sometimes a separate entity built into the line or it could also be an integral part of the heater assembly itself.

If you have a unit that is designed for use with a disposable cylinder and you would like to use a 20lb grill cylinder instead, there are fitting adaptors available from your local propane dealer or sometimes even your local hardware.

If you have questions about your particular unit regarding what type of cylinder it uses, just take it with you to your nearest propane dealer and they will be able to show you the type of cylinder you need.

Same gas different package. Because of the different pressures involved and the need for a pressure regulator in some systems there are different fittings. Some cylinders are refillable and some are not.
