I would have to say that if you want to completely ACE this assignment, contact your local lodge and arrange to interview some of the brothers. We are always happy to talk about our organization with curious people, and you will definitely be applauded for your effort.
Try to avoid conspiracy theory websites.
If you have time, read "American Freemasons: Three Centuries of Building Communities" by Mark A. Tabbert. You'll also find plenty of useful information in the "Freemasons for Dummies" book.

I would say look up your state's grand lodge and find the list of local lodges. I think you would enjoy dropping by and talking to a couple members. In any given area you can find at least one lodge open on any given weekday.
