Cancer is the name of the constellation said to resemble a crab. It is on the horizon at dawn in late June and early July, so it's said to be the sign for that time period. It has nothing directly to do with the illness by the same name.

I have a Cap moon... my parents got divorced when I was really young so everyone was very careful what they said around me for fear that I would turn out the "bad" kid.... But I grew up fine, no addictions or bad stories to tell about. It was my Aries moon half sister who is pretty much a disaster... think a mix between Ke$ha and Mariah Carey... A spoiled brat, she was always very head strong and did whatever she wanted so they just let her do stupid sh!t and then come crying back to them. My half brother has an Aquarius moon and he is practically never home but he is on varsity football, friends with the nerds, the church kids, the jocks, the stoners, the cheerleaders... He's an every kind of guy but has trouble maintaining relationships with loved ones. Then again he is only 17 so it's hard to tell how he will turn out. My parents trust him because for the most part he stays out of trouble and makes good decisions. Great question!

"Cancer" is the name of a constellation in the zodiac. It was named that long before the disease was known. If people are that dumb, then just laugh and correct them. End of hassle.

Cancer literally means "crab" in Latin, hence the name of the constellation.
