A sun roof is metal and has to be retracted in order to see the outside. A moon roof is a tinted piece of glass like a window in the ceiling that you can always see through, whether it's open or closed. Normally moon roofs have the ability to open at an angle, but not retract fully to open wide like a sun roof does.

A sunroof is usually the kind that just tilts out on one end. They usually are not electronic and the moon roof is one that is electronic, that can be tilted, opened partcally or all the way. And, you can use the shade to block out any unwanted sunlight.
