and to celebrate a recent engagement
It did not feel right for some reason.
They both ordered salads - cheap lunch if you ask me -
do you think they might think I cannot afford to take them out to lunch or they might think that is a suspicious gesture - which should not be-?

THey probably felt bad ordering something expensive cause it would seem rude. It has nothing to do with affordability, they probably just aren't too close with you yet and felt weird taking advantage. It's like going on a first date with someone (from a girls standpoint) do you order the filet mignon or the burger? If your a money whore you're probably ordering the filet, but if your a nice and somewhat timid person, you're going for the $10 burger until you get to know each other better. Common courtesy I guess you could call it.

They may have been surprised over your sudden good gesture or are ashame to take full orders because you probably were not convincing enough.Beside, it should be them who should be taking you out because it is their birthday. Treat people out when you yourself has something to celebrate for - a better and not so suspicious gesture.

How long have you worked with them? If it's only been a very short time, they might think you are kissing up to try to win friends.
