I'm looking to buy a 1983 oldsmobile it has a V8. The guy told me that it needs a new timing chain!? I thought nissans have timing chains and hondas had timing belts? I made sure...I asked serpintine belt or timing chain and he said timing chain, you know, next to the water pump.
Does this car have a timing chain and if so about how much to fix?
thanks

Yes it has a chain.
It goes from behind the big pulley on the bottom to another pully behind the pump.
It is inside the engine and can't be seen without removing parts.
$300 to $500 is a guess on repair.

A 1983 General Motors V8 would have a timing chain. Not a timing belt. The timing chain connects the crankshaft to the camshaft and makes sure the valves open at the right time. Labor to replace the chain depends a lot on how many extras are on the engine - power steering, air conditioning, add to the labor cost as they have to be removed to take off the timing chain cover. Removig the harmonic balancer and water pump are required to get to the timing chain. Timing chains for GM products aren't very expensive but the labor to install them is.
Ask one or two of the local auto repair shops for a quote.

timing chain, simple to do yourself. timing chain and gears, inexpensive, i would think around 20.00. gasket, or I've always just used silicone the orange or blue. if you have a decent set of tools it will pass a Saturday by. if this is like a delta, or cutlass, you are better off if you don't want to tackle it yourself, alot of mechanics do side jobs. you will pay entirely to much at a shop. they charge you what Chilton's book calls for hours. which if in a shop with right tools probley done in half the time as you'll be charged..

Did you purchase a protracted guarantee whilst you acquire the motor vehicle? if so and you're interior the time allowance , this may well be a coated merchandise. you have not exceeded the mileage shrink, so provide the Dealership a decision and notice no count if it is roofed. this may well be a untimely failure of an interference motor, they frequently bypass plenty greater effective than 70,000 miles. i'd desire a 2d opinion as to what's misguided with the motor vehicle. Any GM Dealership is authorized to fulfill a guaranty undertaking. solid success

your talking about 100-300$ for the chain the you have to pull apart the front of the engine yourself and put it on.
