This is one of those conundrums in the automotive world that makes one wonder, why did they phrase it like that. The service engine lamp on your Lancer only is a reminder to have your emmisions controls inspected and diagnosed. Some vehicles use a lamp which say exactly that in that this warning is labelled Emissions. Now if it was a check engine lamp, this would be in regards to those parameters as cooling, oil pressure, etc. I am willing to bet that this car has roughly in the neighborhood of 50,000 miles on it where these lights are algorythimically timed to light up to remind you that this is a service interval for this inspection. an owners manual will provide more information. You might also take a look at all of your warning lights, and notice that it has more than one "engine" liight,it is worth mentioning, at startup at the various key positions all warning lamps will light up. This is a test of all lamps to see if they are functioning, i.e., not "burned out". This practice has been used since the inception of the so called "idiot lights". Here again, an owners manual can provide much information including locations of various warning lamps. This should cover it well enough, and when in doubt, take it to a pro.

It means you're due for a tune-up, which you're suppose to have every however many miles. It doesn't actually mean anything's necessarily wrong with your car. If it's running fine, just ignore the light, or have your mechanic turn it off. As long as it's not at JiffyLube, because they'll give you some line, and try to convince you that the air filter you installed yesterday is filthy, and blah blah blah. Don't go to JiffyLube, or any of those other drive-thru oil change type places.

It could be a number of things. You could have a problem as major as an engine failure or as minor as a bad fuel cap. Check to see that your fuel filller cap is tight. Then look under the hood at your vacuum hoses to make sure they are not leaking. You will hear a "sucking" sound if they are and can be repaired easily. If that doesn't work, I would suggest taking to a dealer and letting them diagnose it. Most places charge between $40 and $50 to hook up to the diagnostic computer.
Good Luck!

It means that you should drive to autozone where they offer free computer code pulling. The service engine soon light means exactly that. You could either take it to a professional to find out what it needs, take it to autozone, or if you have a repair manual for your car, you could even pull codes manually. The codes that your car gives tells you what it needs, or is wrong with it. Good luck

Something caused the diagnostic to come on. Take it to Autozone or a repair shop and have the code read to see what is wrong with the car.
