If you could take a pill that would make you heterosexual, would you take it?

I'm just curious to see if people would even want to be cured.
And remember, this is for posterity, so be honest -- how do you feel about it?
Now before you call me a gay basher, I'm not.
In fact my brother is gay (I except him for who he is).
Now please don't say it's a choice,I know it's not.
It's would be like saying I have a choice and believe me I don't, I love women.

I would revise the word cure, but it's the only one that seems to fit.
Homosexuality does happen in nature doesn't mean its natural for any species.
You have to admit that there is something wrong if one doesn't wish to reproduce with the opposite sex.

Yes except people for being gay, doesn't mean I agree with it.

To: i_am_nathan_2002.
Gay people always seem to ask that question" how do you know if you’re not gay"
Well simple. How do you know if you wouldn't like to be raped if you never been?
Both our question need to be re-thought.
And you say that you CHOSE to be this way.
That would suggest that it psychological for you, so what happened?
Most gay people even Doctor's seem to think you’re born that way.
Anyway I guess your answer to my question is No you wouldn’t take the pill.
Thanks for the attack; I expected it for at least one of you.
And you didn’t disappoint me.

To Ashley:
It would be cool to change ones Eye color...wouldn't it?
Not really the same thing, I think you will agree.

To michael941260:
Yea thanks, that was a type-o.
Can't believe I didn't see that.
The line with (I except him for who he is)
Should have been,(I accept him for who he is)
D'oh!

I'm not gay but I hope you will excuse me.
I've just read an article. http://www.boston.com/news/globe/magazine/articles/2005/08/14/what_makes_people_gay/
It was very interesting.
But it does suggest that people are born that way.
And you couldn't take a pill to cure your homosexuality.
But you could cure your children before their sexual orientation is established.
Yes I said cure.
Only because it is the duty of all living things to reproduce and if you unable or willing to (for whatever reason) you are flawed.
I know that sounds mean, but it's logical.
I think if gay people would accept and encourage the fact that they are Genetically born that way, society would accept them more.
I mean really society would have no choice, but to accept them.
But I think a more interesting question would be....
If you could keep your offspring from ever being gay would you?

lol... i'm sorry, I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. You say you love women, yet you know it's not a choice? How would you know that if you haven't been gay? Let me tell you from one gay to a straight... I CHOSE to be gay. i want to live MY life MY way, and I'm happy gay. For me it's a preference, just like someone liking one flavour of ice cream, and another liking another flavour of ice cream.

I appologise if I'm analysing your question too much, however, you say you're not a gay basher, and as i read your question, i get the feeling that you seem to know a lot about homosexuality... well, being completely honest like you requested, i'm offended by your question. If you knew the first thing about homosexuality, regardless of your brother's sexuality, you would know that it is in no way an illness, which you suggested with the pill.

now, I have a question for you;

"who the hell do you think you are?" this was an attack of homophobia. You act as if you know everything about homosexuality... i can assure you that you dont. as you clearly stated, you're not gay, so don't act like you're Mr Know-it-all. It's people like you who give me the craps. you're like a nasty headache that won't go away.

You except your brother? That would mean you exclude him. Do you mean that you "accept" him? I sure hope so!

As for the pill. No, I wouldn't change who I am. I was put here, this way, for some reason, and I don't see a change really being conducive to my life. Now maybe if you combined it with a time machine, and wanted to say we could go back to infancy and give me a pill or injection then, I'd say yes, it would have been a lot easier living as a straight guy.

I used to think that I would change to being a heterosexual if I could, and I still have my moments when I think it would make my life easier. But in the end I know that "easier" is an illusion or at best illogical when it comes to sexuality and one's place in society (i.e., in American/Western society).

So my answer is NO, I would not opt to change if it were possible, nor do I want to. I enjoy being homosexual, and I love myself as I am, in ALL of my identities, not just in my gay identity.

Others have pointed out that the word "cured" in your question reveals the assumption that homosexuality is some kind of sickness. It is not a sickness. Homosexuality is a gift from Nature, just as your heterosexuality is a gift from Nature. So please revise your question's statements, if you want to get well-intentioned answers.

Also, you indicate that "this is for posterity," which makes me think you are doing some kind of informal survey to gather evidence to use in a report for school. If that is the case, you need to consult your school's ethics guidelines for the treatment of human subjects or participants in your research. The way you present your question, and the way you address your respondents here makes your research invalid and could actually get you into hot water if you are a professional.

fall2005b has a great answer but I wish to add my two cents.
How would you feel if someone reversed the question and aimed it at you: Would you take a pill to cure you of being straight?
Of course you wouldn't. Being straight or gay is Not an illness. Both types have their place in this world and yes, the world is big enough for both if we let it be.

Love the "Princess Bride" reference......but no I will take no pill. I am quite happy with the way I am, satisfied with my position and purpose on this rotating ball we call Earth. I have been hand fasted to my best beloved partner for 26 years on October ninth and I pray we will have many more. This is my life, I love it and am completely at peace. I fell in love with her as a person, just so happens she's a woman like me. True love knows no gender. Even death can't stop true love.

I was born with blue eyes. I am gay for the same reason I was born with blue eyes. Chromosonal alignment.

You might as well ask me if I could take a pill to change my eye colour, would I? Why would I want to do that? Is being born with blue eyes some sort of deformity or illness or defect? What are you really trying to say?

I understand why someone would want to, but I ultimately think it's a coward's way out. Fact is, there's still going to be other gay people, and we SHOULD have a right, even if it were a choice (with the availability of a product like the one mentioned, it would kind of become a "choice"). You're essentially turning your back on all the people who do have a backbone. And I'm not ok with that.

Why would I take it? Being gay isn't an illness, I don't need to be cured. Maybe a few years ago, I would have jumped on it, but now? Nah, not a snowball's chance in hell :) I've accepted who I am, finally.

Well as far as being "cured" i don't think so, and your right it's not a choice. But to answer your question NO I would not want to change anything i love my partner and my life. There is so much more to concern yourself with than gay or not gay, just live your life!
