18K gold shouldn't tarnish or corrode. Gold is very strong but malleable - it will bend. To make gold stronger alloys are added like nickel, silver, copper and zinc.
the K (karatage)stands for how much gold is actually in the piece, and they are noted in 24ths. So a 24K ring is 100% gold.
18K has a higher percentage of metal (75% gold) so it's stronger than the 24K, which has no alloys.
(24K gold is not used for jewelry) and it's the most common of all jewelry.
There is no reason why her ring should be corroding, however - chlorine WILL cause abrasions to the gold. Chlorine is one of golds worse enemies.. and if she's wearing them every day in the pool then ya, her ring is taking a beating.
she has to take them off before she swims!!
Platinum is by far the best - and it doesn't need to be Rhodium plated like white gold and as the jeweler told your wife.
So - get her a platinum set so she can swim with her rings on!

I'm not exactly sure, but you might want to also try asking this question in the chemistry section for those who know metals well enough to tell you which one resists the chemicals in pool water. If you don't find anything, look it up online remembering to include the chemicals of pool water (such as chlorine). I don't want to suggest taking off the ring, for it can easily get lost and she may not want it off her finger.

Tell her to take them off when she swims. Any metal will corrode with enough exposure to harsh chemicals.
