You could collect and return some things like bacon drippings for a few extra stamps. They made nitroglycerine explosive from the bacon fat. Kids went door to door collecting used newspapers and all kinds of metal scrap, This was typically accumulated at schools and trucked away for the war effort. Pennies were made of steel and nickels were made partly of silver, since copper and nickel were needed for the war. You bought "oleo" instead of butter and kneaded a yellow capsule into it for color. Women couldn't get nylon stockings, so they coated their legs with dye.

my parents said that things that were made from rubber could no longer be sold because the military needed rubber for ammo. That even included chewing gum. My mom didn't have gum for 2 1/2 years. It was also difficult to buy new car tires. My dad worked in a garage and they didn't order new tires for 7 months. People had to drive less and borrow from neighbors for a lot of things. And canned foods weren't available as much. Everyone had to grow their own foods.
