When trying to express any troubling thoughts with guy friends, I often hear a response such as "I just stop thinking about it" - How can they do that? I feel like I can never stop thinking about anything, my mind is racing with things to think, worry, and ponder about.

Calm down, you will burn yourself out, remember that saying "if you worry you die, if you don't worry you also die, so why worry" tomorrow is another day. Just take it easy for a day, it will do wonders.

Your big question and your additional details are different. I would say men can "not think about anything" when they are braindead or really good at meditation. Although I'm not completely certain about the latter. To stop thinking about any one thing is possible. You just think about something else. I remember an embarassing incident at school that I made a big effort to forget. Never happened. I thought about it every day for years. I still remember it, but not every day. you wanna know what it was?

I agree with you. Sometimes I'll ask my husband what he's thinking about and he says "Nothing." I don't know how that's possible, since I'm always thinking of something, even if it's superfluous.
I don't think it's just guys who can try to put things out of their mind, anyone can try. It's a matter of how your mind operates. If you perseverate on things, you'll have a harder time of trying to not worry about it. Plus, there is the fact that some people are just worriers.

There are numerous expedient methods used to stop the mind from giving rise to stray thoughts and ideas.Collectively they are used as meditative techniques by various cults and sects throughout the world.Meditation is considered a sacred practice.
In practice, numerous thoughts are gradually eliminated by concentrating the attention on a single thought,to achieve a state of one-pointedness of mind.
This can take many years of regular practice to perfect, but significant improvements can be attained by anyone who seriously practices the correct methods.

I suspect so - It would certainly explain a lot of the answers and questions on YA...

It is probably true that most people (men or women) who are honest will admit they really -are- thinking about something at any given moment of the day, usually it's just not anything important enough to mention.

That said; I'm incapable of "not thinking about anything" - even when I'm asleep.

only for short periods of time then they have to think of something else to give the same impression.
The female mind is quite naturally more active than the males in lot of areas. as they have more consequences to their actions than men do and for a longer time.
learning to set priorities about what and when to think or worry about things is the key to a more relaxed life.

Yes. Sometimes we don't think in words. It doesn't mean we aren't thinking at all, but it's different than thinking specific, articulate things. If someone asks what I was thinking about, it may be hard to explain.
