Find a spreadsheet program (OpenOffice.org is good). The important thing about tracking what you spend is categorizing your spending -- food, housing, transportation, fun, etc., etc. Then, after a week, sort your listings according to category, to see how much each category cost for the week. After a month, take the weekly totals and see what you spent for the month.
This takes a ton of discipline. If you fall behind, pick up the pieces and start again. Don't give up. Good luck.

The easiest thing to do is go to a local bank and ask for a check registry and log everything you spend in it daily.
