How do I start booking musical performance gigs for someone?

I will probably have to start acting as something of a manager for a family member until I can't handle it on my own anymore, but I don't really know what I'm doing yet. Anyone have any pointers?

If you are clueless at how to do this, how to read and write a contract, what fees to charge and a million other things, you should not be doing this! Tell them to hire a professional booking agent!
