Paul did in 1 Timothy 5:23 - "No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities."

He advised Timothy to take some wine too to help with his stomach problems.

Indeed it was the apostle Paul. In those days, wine was actually safer to drink than water in many places because the fermentation served to kill any bacteria or other nasty microorganisms that may have been living in the water supply. So, for anyone who was prone to frequent digestive ailments (presumably due to a weak immune system or the like), this was excellent advice.

The translation, by the way, should not be simply "no longer" water, but rather, "no longer only" water -- drinking water at all is not prohibited, but Paul is encouraging Timothy to quit drinking *only* water and abstaining from wine.

Kinda does makes you wonder about those Christian groups who insist that the Bible prohibits drinking alcohol... :)

it's Bible scripture.

"Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities." -- I Timothy 5:23

That's what Paul advised Timothy in the Bible.

Paul in his letter to Timothy who suffered from some type of stomach problem.

Here is a more accurate translation of it.

1Ti 5:23 Don't drink only water. You ought to drink a little wine for the sake of your stomach because you are sick so often.

The first answer is not a more accurate translation. The second one is spot-on.

And even though I think it's probably true that he's not actually forbidding water, the Greek doesn't actually have the word "only". It really is just "drink water no longer".
