"Cingular Wireless bought out AT&T wireless. SBC bought AT&T and kept the AT&T name. SBC has now acquired Cingular Wireless and the rumor is they are going to rebrand Cingular back to at&t "
Quote from Jeff almost correct, SBC aquired at&t, kept the att name and is in the process of aquiring Bellsouth (the other half of Cingular) rebranding Cingular back to ATT would be a move guaranteed to give the big wigs a ride on the short bus.

Well as far as the cell phone, Cingular Wireless bought them out. As far as the long distance service, they had so much trouble charging their customers money they didn't owe, that everyone left, so Bellsouth, which is also the one who ones Cingular took them over. That's why Bellsouth now offers long distance service.

AT&T was bought out by Cingular and has had their mobile phone company transfered to them. Everything else from AT&T still exists, they may be rebranded, but they're still around with the land line phone business.
