Yes, the way humans communicate is incredibly complex, the way you stand, the way you look at someone, the way you breathe, is all a way for your body to communicate, you could be saying one thing but your body could be telling a whole other story. The way you hold your arms, could symbolize defensiveness or ease. The way you hold your eyes (not literally) can show your guilt. Your body can communicate so much more than your words, but its a lost language, in today's world.

Not with coughs (they aren't silent) but in addition to any sort of defined symbolism (like blinking in morse code or some sort of method set up previously) people communicate a lot more than you would think through natrual body language.

I have been with my boyfriend for over 10 years, and we communicate silently all the time in the presence of others. We have never "developed" a secret language, it just occurred. We use body language like eye glances and lip bites and hair tossing. Always, we know what the other is thinking or wanting. One of us can signal we want to leave a party and the other one picks it up and makes a smooth exit. I love it.

Of course!! There was captured soldier, back in the Korean War,I believe, who was forced to make a propaganda tape,he spoke what he was made to say at gunpoint, but blinked out his location in Morse code while talking.Pretty smart!!

If they're coughing, it's not silent.

But to answer...yes. SAT proctors and administrators are told to be aware of (ie listen and look) for subversive forms of communication between test takers.

If you plan it.
Like, if you and your friend went to Uncle Bob the war veteran's house and he goes on about the war, you could scratch your Left ear or something like that if you want out.
:]
