If you mean tv channels like HBO and radio stations like XM and Sirius, they make money from subscriber fees.
If you mean tv channels like PBS and radio stations like NPR, they don't make money. They get operating money from the government (so we pay for it with our taxes) and by collecting donations from viewers and listeners.

Viewers and listeners (you and me) support commercial free TV and radio stations. Additional support comes from grant money from large corporations and endowments from arts and humanity organizations.

PBS uses donations and grants.

Channels like HBO charge you to get the channel.
