There is something of a paradox. In order to present CURRENT data, it is often dynamically populated in a web page, from a database. The database can then be updated dynamically - whereas it is difficult to update web pages every time the data changes. But retrieveing that data from a database also presents something of a security AND a performance liablity.

A failure that can be seen in some web sites is that they break the 3-click rule - kinda like the 7 degrees of separation. It should be possible to access any page of a web site, by just 3 clicks. That is necessary to ensure a valuable customer experience, but on large sites, it is a limitation.

One of the greatest universal fixalls (for large enterprises) are SOA's (you might hear about them as Online Services) - expect to hear a great deal more about them in the coming years. They are keeping ME gainfully emploed for a while :-)

The biggest problem I see is that most sites are not designed with its users in mind. The designer of the site needs to be aware of what the user is looking for, the most performed tasks, who your users are... also, keep the content clean, short and to the point.

Bad colour schemes. Too much on the page. Unintuitive menu structures. Frames.

In my opinion, less is more.
