A little while back I sat down with my friend to help her look for scholarships for her son to apply for. She wanted to help him but didn't know where to start so I offered to help her.

She had a book full of scholarships available, just like I did when I was preparing for college. I told her the first place to start was to mark out the ones he wasn't eligble for.

Nearly half of them were marked out simply because he wasn't black.

Does anybody else see this as unfair? Do blacks deserve more help simply because they are black? Do black people really deserve more help because of the color of their skin? Don't bring up the slave thing. It's pathetic. You, nor your parents, and I bet your grandparents were not slaves...

And another 10 or so because he wasn't from the county the school is in.

Actually, this is a topic that is near and dear to me.
I also think that while I am sorry that things happened to other generations, I think its in the past. I don't think that I should have to pay either monetarily nor emotionally for those past transgressions.
Do I think its **** what happened? Absolutely I do. Did I do it? No- Would I do it? No.
Do people hold the German's of today personally responsible for what Nazi Germany during the Holocaust? No they don't.
So why should I be held personally responsible for things that were done to black people during slavery, or ever the civil rights movement for that matter?
I think that we have gone so far past making up for the past that equal no longer means equal. In today's society, equal means better.
My child will not be able to go to college, know why? Because she is of Caucasian decent, she doesn't qualify for most scholarships. But because we are the working poor, we also won't be able to afford to send her ourselves either. I just think that every child whether black white purple brown or blue should have the same opportunity as the child sitting next to him.
We have all black scholarship funds- if there was an ALL WHITE scholarship fund, the NAACP would be all over that like stink on ****. And don't get me wrong its not all about the black people, its about leveling the playing field. I realize that however many years ago these things were set up to level the field, however not only has it been leveled, its gone the opposite way.
The majority has become the minority. Latinos are a group which are still considered a minority group yet their numbers out way most other ethnic groups 10 fold. But the problem doesn't lie within the ethnic groups, the problem lies within the political parties, and the governmental systems. The change needs to start from there before it changes anywhere else.
I truly hope that no one take offense to what I am saying here, I am not saying that any race is any better or any worse than another. I take people for what they are worth, not because of the color of their skin. My boys are Hispanic. I have friends from every walk of life possible. I don't think that I am any better than anyone. Every race has f*ck wads, its a personality flaw not a color of the skin flaw. I would just like to see a world where so many didn't have to pay for the sins of the father.

Yes it is true blacks have proportionately higher poverty rates then whites but this does not mean all blacks are poor underpriveldged people. Think of Puff Daddy's kids should he get access to specail scholarships. No. Then instead of giving only black people scholarships give all poor people better scholarships. This way you help black and whites and since there are relatively more poor blacks you help relatively more blacks. Stop putting people into groups which are so diverse in so many ways as it proves nothing. Poor African Americans need help just the same as poor white kids whose families have perhaps being borderline slave in the bottom end of society. End racism in all its forms.

I remember when I was in high school and they were telling us about how to get scholarships for college, how to fill them out and whatnot, they went on and on about how many there are out there, you just have to search and apply. They said there are scholarships for things you would never think of, like being short or tall, left-handed, green eyes. I can't remember specifically what qualities but I do remember thinking, Why are there scholarships for things you have no control of? I can't choose to be left-handed, my height, or to have green eyes. I can't choose to be black, white, Indian, Mexican, Cambodian, what right do I have to get money based on these things?????

I didn't find many scholarships that did apply to me, I mostly used loans and my parents helped me out more than they should have. Scholarships should have a fair system, something that rewards the student for hard work, dedication, and interest in an education. They should be blind to the factors no one has control of. Only then would anyone be equal.

You shouldn't get hate email, and you shouldn't have given anyone the idea!! Why declare and promote something negative.

*****(YOU NEED TO REPORT THE ONES WHO WENT OVERBOARD, I DID, ALWAYS DO AND ALWAYS WILL, THEY DESERVE TO BE REMOVED, WE HAVE TO DO OUR PART, I DON'T BELIEVE IN INSULTS, NO REASON FOR THAT, IF PEOPLE CAN'T STICK TO GUIDELINES AND BE DECENT, THEN THEY SHOULDN'T BE HERE AND I DON'T PUT UP WITH IT!!) *****

Nowadays they have the highest number of scholarships for minorities, however that shouldn't stop anyone else from applying for scholarships and especially for government grants, they are the best.

www.usgrants.gov

You'll find hundreds of different grants available, for just about anything you can think of, the only thing about it is you do need to know someone involved in preparing them to be requested and someone like a specialist in order for you to get it, it is the way to go.

bsktbllck should get reported, she didn't even read or understand the question but yet, uses obscene language, this is a clear example of a stupid, dumb and ignorant person, who doesn't read the questions but says nonsense, it is so irritating, that's yahoo answers for you.

There was once a time when white colleges, or any other good college for that matter was "too good" to let black people in.
then we thought about having AA to give us an oppurtunity to get into college..Im not trying to point the finger but if white people would have never did this to black people, there would be no AA, so you pretty much bought that on yourselves..Also the untited ***** college fund will help anyone out, I remember some white girl who attended the meeting and got her ends just like every black person that was there...Hating is not going to change anything..Get used to it..

White male...?

Single most discriminated-against group in all of scholarship-hunting, and rightly so. Other groups need more assistance---orphans, the disabled, working mothers, and so on. Grow up, get over it, look for other scholarships, and tell your friend's kid to keep his grades up so that he'll be more likely to get scholarships. Consider a loan, if worse comes to worst.

And your suggestion that slavery and skin color are the main reasons that blacks have so many scholarship programs shows complete lack of empathy for the problems that face America's black population TODAY. True, slavery was probably the biggest cause of this, but it was ignorant to suggest that black students are only after scholarships because their families were enslaved. You go spend a few nights visiting people in a black ghetto, though, and then think long and hard about why black students need so much help to work their way out of them.

My cousin had this exact same problem when applying for medical school. He couldn't get into Emery because of this policy, despite the fact that he got his undergraduate degree in three years with an "A+" average and was in the local paper in high school for winning a chemistry award.

I think that the real racism is in people who think that black people can't do well enough to get into good schools without this policy, and who therefore support these measures as a gesture of "charity". If Condoleezza Rice can get a Ph.D. at the age of 25, then I don't think black people need such "charity" from the empty-headed hypocrites in academic circles.

Has your friend looked into other scholarships for her son as well? There are scholarships out there if he plays sports, has good grades, a child of a parent who lost their lives during wartime/peacetime, and the sort. That's just an excuse, darling. It also sounds to me that she's(as well as you) playing the "race card". Now you see how it feels when blacks and other minorities felt left out in post secondary education.

Well, I've got news for your friend. If she doesn't mind, her son can enroll in an HBCU(historically black college/university) and his schooling would be damn near free because she would be considered a "minority". That's one of the options. Also, consider a work study program. There are options for scholarships, but due to the increase of college and a lot of cutbacks(thank Mr. Bush and his cronies for that one!), you really have to look and dig for any funding, be it student loans or grants.

Quit crying foul and tell your friend and her son to get out there and find(as well as earn) that money for college. His grades have to be good as well because there are a lot of bright kids out here of all races that want, need, and deserve a college education.

I agree. It's ridiculous. I am disabled and I know people think I get a lot of "help". Well no, I do not. You know why? Because I worked at a very high level gov't job for 13 years. I had to leave it because my disibility became progressively worse. Guess what? I'm not eliglble for ANY assistance because I had a job at one point!!!!! When I go to the doctor, i have to pay out of pocket while others get Medicaid. Nice. I'm not talking all black people either. It's A LOT of illegals too. **** will never be fair. People should be compensated for their achievements not skin color.
