You can install oiled foam pre-filters over the K&N's, which will help somewhat.

Without an airbox, your bike's tires are throwing dirt, water, whatever's on the road, in the air -- which is then aspirated into the carbs via the filters. So, yes, it is a problem when you don't have an airbox.

With an airbox, the air is drawn through a snorkel from a point more forward and above. It's also cool air (as opposed to the hot air that's coming off the cylinders)

For best longevity and easiest jetting/tuning, either install an OEM airbox (you can cut holes in it if the engine is modified), or if that's not possible, fabricate a box.

K&N filters work on particulate down to 5 microns - foam (and stock) filters work down to 3 microns. We see longer piston life on engines running foam filters.

The problems you may have heard with pod filters come from some cars that locate the pod filter a few inches from the ground, where it can slurp up an entire puddle. Not an issue on a motorcycle unless you plan to do some of the antics I've seen on dirt bike websites. They won't be affected by raindrops.

150K on a K&N. Lots of them in Gold Wings and Valks.

I've never heard of anyone having trouble with the pods in the rain.

I will just say, I wouldn't ever use a Kand N. Seen to many motors go down with them in it. Hold it up to a light, You see pin holes all in it. Sure more air and more dirt.
