I think a long time ago .com was specifically for commercial websites, and .org had their thing, and so on. Now it doesn't matter what extension you have.

i dont think it matters anymore, however, search engines are sometimes limited in which extensions they search for or how close to the top of the list they pop you out ... learn about meta-tags(invisible labels that are search keys) that you imbed in your website to target your searchers to promote your site to a higher location on the search list so you are more likely to reach your target audience and not lost in the crowd ... one thing i have noticed that irritates me when i do searches is that i want to find a more local business and they do not include location meta-tags of city and state so i have to look at more sites than i want to actually find a local business or one within a reasonable distance. i want to be able to make my vendors accountable and be able to visit them if i have a real problem for some items or services.
metatags also allow you to see who is soliciting your business so you aren't responding to people who are not feasable or cost effective for doing business, eg., if you have an accounting business out of your home, you may not want to be doing the books for someone in singapore or have to deal with exchange rates of other countries to get paid.
