The tank is buried under ground. There are no fumes that come from the tank...the liquid leaches into a leach field, so theoretically there no problem to have a fire pit or bonfire pit nearby if it is a concrete septic tank, which is common with older homes. With NEWER HOMES it may be a problem BECAUSE a lot of newer septic tanks are PLASTIC, and the HEAT FROM THE FIRE may cause a problem if the fire is too close to the tank. ALSO keep in mind that most of the time the leach field pipes in both older and newer systems are PLASTIC ... they should be buried pretty deep down so the bonfire may not be a problem BUT if you dig the pit really deep then BEWARE, you may land up MELTING the plastic pipes ... ALSO don't drive a heavy vehicle over the area where the leach field is ... the vehicle will compress the ground and may damage the plastic leach field pipes...

Here is some info on septic systems:

I assume you have a septic tank that is underground RIGHT????? If that is the case. Yes, it is fine becuase the septic tank has been burried properly in the ground so that fires, etc. don't effect it. Now this is again asuming that whomever did the outside plubming did it correctly. But yes there will be methane gas generated from the underground septic and it will go above ground. But the amount is so neglagble that you almost have to put some sort of dome over the ground where the septic actually is. Now if it is above ground. I don't think I have to tell you that it is very unsafe.

I wouldn't do that if I were you! Methane gas fumes are highly ignitable. Been there when someone did that! Not Pretty!
