We're celebrating our 5th Wedding Anniversary November 20th and live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We want to celebrate the weekend before. We want to do a nice romantic getaway kinda of celebration, so Vegas and things of that nature are out. We want to drive to our destination so it shouldn't be too far. We're looking for a relaxing atmosphere, beautiful scenery, and, of course, affordable. Ski resorts, bed and breakfasts, nice hotels are all options, but we want to try to keep it under $200 a night. Any first hand experiences that turned out really well in this area? Thanks in advance!

Sedona, AZ is absolutely beautiful. It's a bit cold in November, but not too bad. There are some wonderful Bed & Breakfasts there. Take a look at http://www.canyonwrencabins.com/ for an example. Just google "Sedona cabin" or Sedona bed and breakfast" to find more.

Got just the spot for you... La Posada Hotel in Winslow.

La Posada was one of the last of the grand railroad hotels built in 1930 for Fred Harvey and the Santa Fe railroad by famed southwestern architect Mary Jane Colter (who designed many of the historic buildings at Grand Canyon). Colter designed La Posada to invoke the idea of a Spanish landowner's hacienda with rustic Spanish furniture and iron work. There are many quite little gardens, patios, and spots to curl up and read a book. The ballroom has hardwood floors and a huge fireplace. The whole hotel is surrounded by gardens and trees.

During its heyday, it was a popular spot with people such as aviator Charles Lindbergh (who had his own reserved room), Howard Hughes, and numerous Hollywood movie stars and starletts.

After the decline of railroad travel in the 1940s, the hotel was closed and turned onto railroad offices. The offices were closed in the 1980s and this historic building was nearly torn down until the current owners bought it in the late 1990s and spent years restoring it to Colters original vision.

It is a fantastic place to stay. Probably my favorite hotel in all of Arizona - maybe the southwest. It is a magical, intimate, relaxing sort of place. There are only about 50 rooms - all comfortable and nicely furnished along Colter's themes. The hotel resturant (The Turquiose Room) is probably the best in Northern Arizona.

I could easily spend the entire day resting and reading around the hotel, but if you feel like going out for a little day time adventure, than you can check out nearby Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park or (a little further away) the still active Trading Post at Ganado (Navajo Reservation) or the ancient prehistoric cliff dwellings at beautiful Canyon de Chelly.

Check out the website below... it sounds like just what you are looking for.

Duango Colorado. I believe it is only about a five hour drive from where you are. Nice hotels, awesome restaurants. The narrow gage train ride up into the mountains can be very romantic and quite scenic this time of year.
