I want to bring my guitar(s) with me when I visit my family in California next month. With security being what it is, what is the best way to transport it (them)? I will most likely be flying out of Orlando, if that makes a difference.

I have had to buy mine a ticket so that it can ride along next to me. A ticket makes it a legitimate passenger in its own rights. You also get its food and peanuts. If you check it as baggage you better have a good case and loosen the strings and truss rod that is in the neck cuz that wood is gonna swell like crazy in the baggage comparment. Whatever was glued together will probably come apart. so no matter what you do, it wont be the same. It needs to be in the pressurized cabin with you.

Some advice - Loosen the strings first. The air pressure could damage the truss rod if the strings are not loosened.

If at all possible, try to bring it as carry on luggage. I did this years ago. Otherwise the case may get tossed around, and the guitar(s) risk damage.

Do NOT check your guitar unless you have a case that a truck can drive over.

Use your guitar as your carry-on. I bring guitars as carry-on all the time. If the overhead is full, it will fit under the seat if you are traveling with a buddy and he doesn't mind the guitar there.

My husband's gut-wrenching decision, as well.

His choices when we moved back to the States were to ship it privately, put it in the cargo hold, or to buy an extra seat. He shipped privately.

Another option might be to buy another guitar while you're there and leave it on the West Coast for when you visit.

You fly with a guitar? I always fly in a plane myself. Do you have to fly low? Just kidding.;-) Sorry, I couldn't resist.
But seriously, I would ship it UPS or FedX and insure it. I wouldn't put it on a plane.

You can check a guitar, but it's too big to have as a carry-on.
