....I can't change my job... it would leave several people homeless.. I love what I do and it is a great service to people with disabilities that don't deserve to be in institutions..

Try your hardest to quit. Alot of the advise given was good. Start by cutting back, keep reducing the amount of cigarettes you have each week until you get down to one.
My friend smoked heavily through all her 5 pregnancies. There were no complications in birth, they were all of a good solid weight. and for that person that said what about the complications in the future... well her kids are 20, 18. 16, 8. 4.. none have ever been sick a day in their lives apart from a cold and the odd childhood illnesses such as chicken pox.
I don't smoke but I don;t believe in scaring someone into quitting.
Yes there could be complications for your baby but there may not be. Many women who are 'saints' during their pregnancy can have a baby of low weight and have other complications.
Do your best in stopping, get help if you need it but don't stress too much about it because Stress could be a bigger factor in having an unhealthy baby.

Cut-back cut-back cut-back. But, if it's really gonna stress you out that much, limit the amount of cigs you have. I smoked through my entire pregnancy and had a very healthy baby, 8lbs 8oz came 2 days before my due date. I could give you a list of people I know that smoked during their pregancy and there babies are very healthy! I'm not saying you shouldn't quit but, stress also is bad. And an OB told my sister that smoking hurts you more than the baby. Each day, smoke one less cigarette. If you get an urge for one, grab something healthy to eat instead. Talk to your OB about possible ways to quit too. I'm jsut trying to give you both sides of the stories good and bad. It's not good, but I don't think it's devasting. My mom smoked with me, an I"m one of the healthiest people. My little brother, my mom didn't smoke with him and he's the one with all the issues, ADD, RA, allergies etc. Good Luck on quitting and Congrats!

There is no real answer to this question...except do you really want to give up? If so go and see your doctor or someone who can advice you of the safest way to go about it, as you do not want to cause undue stress on your body early in the pregnancy and miscarry, I am not saying keep smoking quite the opposite, just get help with doing it and NO DRUGS of any sort ....Been pregnant and giving up ....wow I know I have been there...you can do it, Just get good advice for the safest way to do it....All the best and WOW congratulations on the new life you have growing with in you...I am happy for you...All the best. And don't feel guilty if you can't give up all at once as this will make it harder to achieve it and if you can't do it, then just cut right down on the amount you are smoking....

i think you've gotten alot of good advice already, I just wanted to add that if stress is a problem, maybe you could try and find another way to relieve your stress besides smoking.
I dont smoke, but kudos to you that you are trying. I agree with others that stressing out about the smoking, or being stressed out because your not smoking, is probably just as bad as the smoking itself. Do your best for your baby, try to cut back as much as possible. Don't beat yourself up. We all do the best that we can, but smoking or not, what's gonna happen's gonna happen. I may not smoke and still have a sick baby. We just all want to make sure we are all doing everything we can to put the odds in our favor, aren't we. And none of us want to think we caused anything either. Again, don't beat yourself up! Try hard, VERY HARD! And then accept that we dont really have control over our futures anyway, we just have to take it as it comes. Good Luck! Talk to your doctor about it too!

I quit cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant.
You said the baby means so much to you so remember that when you get the urge to light up. When I had the urge I would just rub my belly. Smoking isn't your life anymore, the baby is.
Just don't buy any.
Toss the ashtrays. Clean the house and get the odor out. Clean out your cars ashtrays. Ask people not to smoke in your house.
Remember - the urge to smoke only lasts five minutes. When that five minutes passes, the urge is over and you don't think about it!
I heard yoga helps - you can try that?
congratulations and good luck!!

Why do people get on here and say i smoked my whole pregnancy and my baby was fine.. It may be ok now but later on in its like it easily could have problems. Why risk the health of your own flesh and blood because of your own selfishness? And plus not everyone is the same, even if your own kid is ok it doesn't mean that someone elses kid will be. You aren't ready for children if you dont' know what it means to sacrifice because you need to do that a lot for you kids. Talk to your doctor they can help you. Please quit.

WOW!! Congratulations!!
Yeah, you really should quit smoking. I know that sunflower seeds and grapefruit juice help nicotine to leave your system faster. You could try lots of that and just cold-turkey from the smokes. Just keep that beautiful baby in the front of your mind when you want a smoke.
Blessings! I know how hard it is to quit, but I know you can do it!
Much Love!!

Good for you, and CONGRATULATIONS!
Speak to your O.B. they are trained to assist you with this. DO NOT use that patch. No way.
The smoke will cause many complications for the baby long term. Even second hand smoke is bad. I have horrid allergies as a direct result. Hang in there and ask a professional. He/She will know what to do. Again, CONGRATS!

I am preg with baby#4 and have never smoked. But I would guilt trip myself into quitting! Everytime you light up think this could be hurting my baby! If there are others who smoke in the home make them smoke outside (works great when it gets cold out!) Try chewing gum or sucking on candies to help. I get sever morning sickness in the first tri-mester and one of the triggers was cigarrets!

I was a smoker when I got preg with my first child. In my opinion, there wasn't a choice. I quit smoking, cold turkey. It was hard, absolutely. But my baby's health was much more important than my discomfort for awhile. Just keep reminding yourself that you want your baby to have the best in life, you want your baby to be healthy...and just do it. Nothing in life that is important is easy to do. Good luck!
