Probably because the Tv exec's lack the Talent to know a good ting when they see it. They rely on copying a successful format over and over and when something new and truely unique comes along they don't know what to do.
If you think back to Xfiles, it was years before it got the recognition it deserved and then the studio's decided it was a cash cow and started messing with it.
Perhaps that is the definition of cult TV - when the viewers realise how good it is long before the Network does.

It cost a lot of money to produce--and nowadays if a show isn't getting astronomical ratings within the first 2 episodes, it is doomed. It sounds stupid because new shows really do need time to build a following, a core audience, or they won't be successful. Executives are too antsy and don't want to wait--so they pull shows way before their time. At least Firefly got to show 10 episodes (cant' remember the exact number). Some shows are cancelled after only 1 show.

I suppose as with any show, it was a ratings issue. They need the ratings to get the revenue. I had never even heard of the show until my son loaned me the DVDs. Loved it. When they made the movie Serenity I went the first day it opened in our town. Hope Josh Weden comes up with more quality T.V. and/or movies.
