It depends on your state. You will have to win the election, but getting on the ballot is what varies from each state. If you want to run under a party banner you need to be nominated by that party. Most states require you to win the primary election for that party. Some states allow minor parties to simply nominate a candidate. If you want to run as an independant, then you will probably have to gather enough signatures from registered voters. the Secretary of State's office or your board of elections can give you a copy of the form. If you want to run as a write in candidate, then you would need to fill out a form and pay a filing fee.

Each state has different laws concerning ballot access, and they vary a lot.

Once you get on the ballot, you will need to have a good campaign manager and a lot of money if you plan on winning the election.

Becoming A Congressman

It takes 2 things to become a Congressman:

1. Money: Raise the amount of funds it takes depending where you live.

2. Political Party Approval: Winning office without political Party in America is nearly impossible if you are not really well known.

With these 2 things you can create a plan of attack and go for it.

you really have to start at the bottom, trying to be something small in the government, even like a janitor or something, no one in the political system just started as a congressman. You have to know a LOT of people, and really get your name out there and let people know what you have to offer, such as going door to door to door, and flyers and a lot of hard work. Attending all political events even police events. so your face is getting recognized and Really it just takes quite a few years for this. Thats why you never really see young congressman. Because most worked there *** off to get there. But good luck, if you have good plans, just keep it up, You will succeed if you belive in yourself. Keep at it and dont give up, it takes a lot of time. My best friend has had great ideas and he started by getting a job at our capitol, and he worked his way up and doesnt plan to back down, so, work work and more work, Good luck tho, you can do it!

For an exact answer, check with the state election authority where you live. In Texas, where I live, this is the Secretary of State. The general process is the same, but each state has their own specific rules.

You need to find out how to file for an office, either on a party ticket or as an independent. Then you need to know how to legally run a campaign. If you are on a party ticket, you may need to win the primary election or get a party nomination (some smaller parties do not use primary elections). If you win the primary, then you have the general election in November to win. If you go as an indpendent, it is much harder, but you only have the general election to win.

After you win the general election, the party you ran under will give you all of the instructions you need on how to get your office and staff. If you ran as an indpendent or third party candidate, both major parties will be happy to help explain the process for you. Be careful since they are trying to get you to vote with them on congressional strucutres, even if you do not vote with them on laws.

Things you will need to know about a campaign inlcude appointing a campaign manager, a campaign treasurer, rules on advertisements, and rules on campaign finances (what you can get in donations and limits on how you spend it).

Good luck if you try. We need some good people up there.
