My husband is 50 and will be retiring next year. I am 31 and have been in my career for 5 years. My earning potential is >100,000. His earning potential doesn't even come close to that. He argues that hes not used up and will continue to work (which I agree with), but at the same time, I believe that my income is going to be the one that carries us after he retires and we should focus on mine more than his. This means I believe we should move to places based on my career potential. I really don't mean to discount what he does, but to me it seems logical that as a family we go where the work is for me, and not so much based on him. Any thoughts? Am I wrong for thinking this way?

Have you ever heard that saying the more money you have the more you will spend.
Yes, your career is important but does he really see that?
You need to meet in the middle. Your marriage is all about compromises, and without that it won't work. Find middle ground, and make suggestions, but you also have to listen-NO, but Really Listen.
And how long have you two been married? Sometimes you grow up in seperate directions and need help finding eachother again. Maybe he needs to let you have your moment in the spotlight as he has found in his career, but it is all about compromises. You both must be willing to make them.

After next year, I agree with you. Since he will be retiring, he can draw his pension or whatever he has from anywhere. Any work he does will probably be on a smaller scale. You are just coming into the prime of your career and since you have the higher earning potential, how you live you both live your life together (if you like some of the finer things) will probably be predicated on your income. He should be willing to compromise on this. He has experienced a lot of the things you are about to, and he should be willing to let you do the same.

First, reverse roles and see what it would be like in his shoes. I know that you have many more years to go in your career, but money isn't everything in life. Yes, you would live a better lifestyle, BUT is it worth the happiness and the bitterness that will come if you are constantly moving? I say the two of you sit down and work out the pros and cons together and come up with a compromise that the both of you can live with. As far as I know that is what marriage is all about. Compromise. Good luck.

If he is able to retire next year with all his benefits, I would move to where you can reach your potential earnings. It really wouldn't make sense to stay where you're at if he's retired. The only way I would understand you wanting to stay in that town is if you had children trying to finish school. Otherwise, I would be planning on a move right after he retires.

If your both working now why can't you move or at least think about it after he retires. In a relationship, who cares what one or the other makes. Your supposed to be life partners, act like it.

If he's retiring in a year, it makes sense to focus on your career, sounds like you have many years left to work.

Woah.....the first thing I need to tell you is that you shouldn't be married to a....50 year old!!!
My second advice is that if your job pays more, then you should go with your job!You will have enough money for retiring and food and all kindsof things! So go with your job!
