San Diego is the 7th largest city in the US but does not seem that big because it is really spread out. The freeway system is easy to understand and there is so much to do in San Diego. There are lots of outdoor activities such as watersports, beach, hiking, volleyball, bicycling, rollerblading, skating, surfing, jetskiing, kayaking. There's also art galleries, theater, concerts, and sporting events. Lots of restaurants and night life as well.
If you're into wine, there's wineries in San Diego that offer free wine tasting and even more an hour or so north on Hwy. 15 just off of the freeway in Temecula.
The weather is mild. This means that it is not as hot here as it is in other places during the summer and it is not as cold here as it is in other places during the winter. You hardly ever need a coat here.

It's been a lot of years but I thoroughly enjoyed my trip. Check out Point Loma, tour the lighthouse, spend some time when the tide is out by checking out the tidepools for critters. There's also a great series of little shops there, kind of like a boardwalk theme - it's called Seaport Village. Depending on when you go, you may also see some whales migrating to the Gulf of Mexico
When I travel, I go with an eye toward the photography, and so I looked for the 'pretty' places. The sailboats were fun, the bridge to Coronado was interesting, and the S/D zoo has LOTS of photo ops. Last time I was there, I was working for a hotel reservation center and so I got to stay at three different hotels.
The Catamaran on Mission Bay was great (at the time .. no idea what it's like now) because we had a bay view and there weren't a lot of people milling about.
The other nice thing about San Diego is that you're no more than 60-90 minutes from desert, mountains, etc.
It's expensive there... if money is limited, stay in a hotel inland from the beach, and check with the hotel's concierge about discount coupons to some of the attractions. Lots of hotels/ motels offer these as a bonus to their guests.
Have a GREAT trip!

Depends on what part of the city you visit. The San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park are an incredible place. Tons of museums, all in the park -- everything from the Museum of Man to the Miniature Railroad Museum (old guys, little trains - lots of fun).
Down by Hotel del Coronado, you get the elegance and beauty - along with watching some guys in brutal pain if you're there when the Navy SEALS are training.
Old town is touristy - but fun.
Beaches can be crowded.
Go see Shamu, and enjoy some fishy fun at Sea World. Drive up the coast a few miles and visit Legoland.
Weather is usually just near perfect - warm evenings and not too hot days.
We visit at least once a year.

San Diego is a wonderful area and there is so much to do!!! You can go to Sea World, Lego Land, Old Town. There are alot of neat museums and places to see in Balboa Park, The San Diego Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal Park. You can take a harbor cruise on the harbor, drive over to Coronado Island and walk through the Hotel Coronado. Seaport Village also has some nice shopping and is right on the Harbor!!! You can go camping on Mission Bay which is fun. Plus, if you want to go a little ways out of San Diego, you can go up to Julian which is in the mountains and walk through town. Thats where you get the BEST Buffalo Burgers and FRESH FRESH Apple Pie!!!! Have Fun!!!!!!!!

It's a little crowded, urban.
Sunny almost all the time, and usually warm. Not too hot, since it's by the ocean, and the ocean breezes generally keep it fairly cool in the summer.
The people are generally friendly.
I lived there for several years.

It never rains and there are a lot of hot females in bikinis. It's real easy for a guy to have 5 or 6 girlfriends at once.

Warm. A little humid, but not unbearable. Friendly people too. My boyfriend describes it as the florida of the west coast. But without all the touristy stuff.
