It is called the rest-mass equivalent energy. It is a result of the transformations derived in the Theory of Special Relativity. It does not mean that mass can be converted to energy, although that can be done on a small scale. It is more significant in the inverse expression, that energy has the properties of mass, and explains the deflection of light in a gravitational field, and the detected momentum of photons.

It basically means that matter and energy are one and the same thing; that under the right conditions, energy could be converted to matter and matter to energy, and that very little mass contains a huge amount of potential power (which is not however necessarily easily accessible).
The sun loses 4.26 million tonnes of mass every second, through the conversion of 148 million tonnes of hydrogen into 144 million tonnes of helium; at the distance Earth is, only one part out of 2 billion actually gets on our planet, which is to say, the sun shines on Earth thanks to only 2 kg of matter converted to energy (the rest of the 4.26 million tonnes is to shine everywhere else...)
Consider that: 2 kg per second to provide ALL the energy Earth receives from the sun.

Well it shows a relationship between mass and energy since the speed of light is constant.
Well it means that all masses have energy, no matter the mass. Although it does mean that the bigger the mass, the more energy.

E is energy
m is mass
c is the speed of light.
Before Einstein discovered this equation, we never never knew that energy and matter were connected like this. In fact we always thought that "Matter cannot be created or destroyed". Well this equation shows that matter can be converted to energy and energy may be used to make matter. Its a pretty amazing discovery if you ask me, maybe Einstein's greatest.
