This is going to sound weird, but keep an open mind. Rats. I've had 8 rats and 6 babies. I only have one that is smelly, and I'm not sure why. The others as long as you use the right kind of bedding just don't smell. They won't urinate or poop in their bedding, once they get a little older. They DO NOT bite. (Again I've only had 1 that bit. other than the babies when they're little but they grow out of it). Don't feed them through the sides of their cage and they won't even be tempted to bite. They're easy to care for, although if they're alone then they need more human interaction. They can be taught to do tricks, and love to run around your room or house, and won't get lost in the walls lol. (Again as long as their old enough.) They don't try to get out of their cage, and even if you leave the cage open, they don't go far. Although some do thave a habbit of chewing on the wire of their cage, none of them have eaten their way out, or even chipped the paint. Anyway, if you go away they're fine alone, and they're really like little dogs. They'll come when you call them, even if they're out running around. They really are a great pet!

Hermit crabs are pretty clean, they hardly ever go to the bath room and if you use a coconut bedding(like eco earth ) it'll accually break it down for you. They do however require a proper set up if you want them to live for longer then a month. They need 70-80% humidity, 75-80'f temp, a glass aquarium with a glass lid(to keep the humidity in), both salt and fresh declorinated water and a varied healthy diet. They are fun pets my kids love them!

Most definitely a rat. They groom themselves almost all day and also groom each other. They are easy to care for and don't make a lot of noise. As i write this to you now i am sitting with my rats. If you get a girl you need to get two because they love having Friends. If you get a boy it is OK for you to keep him alone but you need to give him alot of attention. Rats are very friendly and smart. I have had to many rats to name and too many litters to name as well. I have trained many of those past rats to come to their name when called and even let them run around the house. They dint bite like gerbils, hamsters, and mice; they are also more friendly than a rabbit and a guinea pig. I would recommend rats to anyone. They just have a bad reputation thanks to Hollywood movies. Good Luck!

Rats. They "wash" their paws before they eat, groom themselves after they're done and other times throughout the day, and groom cagemates that they like.
A bonus is that they're VERY smart, friendly, and you can teach them really cool tricks.
My rats loved "swimming" in a big, shallow, plastic container filled with smooth rocks, water (I usually made it a little warm and let it cool off as they played.), and treats like nuts and raisins. They would get cleaned off (Neither of my rats liked actual baths.) and they enjoyed fishing for treats. Just a tip for getting them into a bathtub every once in a while ;)

When you mean cleanest do you mean the smell of the cage or the smell of the animal. I liked guinea pigs because they don't smell and they are very easy to take care of. JUST don't feed them lettuce.

a pig..no I am serious. a little pig. And, when it gets too big, well, I suppose you can have pork, ham, bacon and whatever else is yummy from a pig.
My mom had a turkey...nasty animals. She couldn't eat him at Thanksgiving though. She fell in love with him. But, someone stole him and I'm sure had a wonderful thanksgiving.

Although I haven't had one, I've heard that domestic rats are very clean and great pets. They're very smart and enjoy interaction more than most other rodents. Hamsters are cute and furry but their pee smells and if you have a wire cage, they'll pee outside of it.

i think the smallest clean animal is a fish because all you have to do is change their water and give them food so it is really easy to take care of a fish.
