Definitely. DVD or CD drives have a lifespan of about 50,000 hours of use, the keypoint being "hours of use." Below is an article from PC World magazine with the information you seek.
"Ask Our Experts: DVD Burner Life Span?: How long should an optical drive last under normal use?" -- written by Melissa J. Perenson (http://www.pcworld.com/article/126096-1/article.html)
Question:
My DVD writer drive has worked hard and perfectly in its 20-month lifetime. But now it generates discs with errors. At what point does a drive become unreliable?
submitted by Antonio Brunacci, via e-mail.
Answer:
Senior Associate Editor Melissa J. Perenson responds: Optical drive vendors tell me that the expected point of failure for a DVD±RW burner is about 50,000 to 75,000 hours of operation--whether the PC is active, or simply drawing power in standby mode. Although a drive failure can occur after just a few months of vigorous use, the best drives can last five years or even more. Heat is your drive's greatest enemy; you can avoid premature failure by ensuring your PC has good internal air circulation.

No. More than likely the life of a disk burner is out weighed by technology creating faster drive speeds. The number 1 wear component on a drive is the mechanism that spins the disk at 600 RPM and up. As with all devices that have many moving parts the likeliness of error is greater than having less moving parts.

properly, have you ever made any ameliorations on your computer these days (eg. put in new application)? Are you utilising a various kind of DVD blanks? some older DVD burners can no longer burn to a 16x DVD blanks. I very own an older Memorex 8x DVD burner that can not burn directly to 16x media. If no new application or DVD blanks have been used then you definately can attempt to roll back your computer utilising abode windows equipment fix function. abode windows XP periodically makes equipment checkpoints and creates a fix factor earlier any application installation. fix your computer to an in the previous state whilst your DVD burning worked. bypass to start up menu > help and help > Undo ameliorations on your computer with equipment fix. %. a date and fix,

yes. as a matter of fact it does. but if you make your burner rest after a couple of burnings. plus a regular cleaning of your lens then you will have a burner that will live like moses. just a reminder, never support piracy. good day!

If you drive your car too much, will it wear out? inevitably yes your burner will wear out, by simple logic. i couldn't tell you how long that would be. but hey, that's what you bought it for, so put your money you spent on it to good use!

You shouldn't need to worry about this with any moderately new drive.
