What is the best way of filling 64 sq/ft within 1 foot deep with dirt. Should I use water during or after the hole is filled with dirt. How can I compress the dirt to make a nice solid ground to plant few 15 gal. trees.
Thank you

You do not want to compact the soil if you are growing trees, that would take all oxygen out of soil. I would try to add some compost to the hole.; composted leaves etc. You might be able to go to a composting site in your area to get some cheaply. Then plant your trees and water well as you want to takeout any air pockets.

if you are going to plant trees in this space then i would suggest not to compact the soil so as not to ruin the structure of it. Plants need oxygen to grow as much as water and compaction removes oxygen from the soil. I would recommend filling the area, planting the required plants and watering the whole area down and it will gradually compact over time. Happy shovelling.
